Training for Managers & Supporters

Getting Started

To support you in your first five months of volunteering with the Scouts we have a number of training modules for you to complete. You can complete these in any order.


With the exception of Tools for the Role (04) the modules can be completed as independent learning and validated by successfully completing the online assessment at the end of the module. Tools for the Role (04) must be validated by a training adviser, if you are not sure who they are, speak to your volunteer line manager.

Essential Information (01)

The aim of this module is to provide all adults in Scouting with the essential information needed to get started in their role.

Safeguarding

This module is mandatory and requires renewal at least every three years.

The aim of this module is to provide all adults in Scouting with an understanding of safeguarding practice and responsibilities as a member of Scouts, to keep everyone safe.

Safety

This module is mandatory and requires renewal at least every three years.

The aim of this module is to provide all adults in Scouting with an understanding of safety practice and responsibilities as a member of Scouts, to keep everyone safe.

GDPR

The aim of this module is to provide all adults in Scouting with an understanding of what the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) means for them, their Scout Group, District and County and how to effectively align with it.

Tools for the Role (04)

Note: this module requires validation by a training advisor

The aim of this module is to provide the basic information on the individual’s role or area of responsibility and some practical help to get the individual started in the role.

Trustee Induction (If a member of an Executive Committee)

The aim of this module is to provide the Charity or managing Trustees with information on their legal responsibilities and current regulations. You only need to complete this module if you have a role as a trustee / Executive Committee member.

Manager & Supporter Modules

The training modules for Managers or Supporters in scouting provide you with guidance on leading groups of volunteers, facilitating growth in your area and more.


All the modules are listed below with a link to the module information on the Scout Association's website. Where there are BSO specific resources, these are also details with the relevant modules.

The Fundamentals of Scouting (05)

The Fundamentals of Scouting is for all adults in Scouting working towards the award of their Wood Badge.

This module is mandatory and requires renewal at least every three years.

This module is for Section Leaders, Assistant Section Leaders, Managers and Supporters working towards their Wood Badge. It is also for Administrators who wish to undertake further training.

Delivering a Quality Programme (12A)

Delivering a Quality Programme is a mandatory module for those who are completing a Wood Badge.

Skills Courses

There are three skills courses as part of the Leadership and Management Training:

  • Skills of Management
  • Achieving Growth
  • Meeting the Challenges

It's recommended that where possible learners complete the Skills of Management course first as many of the skills and concepts are built upon in later courses.
