The choir was founded in 1949 by Margaret Lomas who set up a youth choir in the town.  The story goes that as the young people grew into adults, it then became an adult choir.  The Choral Society has undertaken a variety of choral classics (see ‘Past concerts’ page) as well as some modern compositions and styles.  Some of our members have been singing with us for over thirty years and three members have been singing with the choir for fifty years!  The choir has taken part in a number of projects such as BBC Songs of Praise and the 2009 BBC drama “All the Small Things”.  The choir celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2009 and looks forward to celebrating 70 years of singing in 2019.
